Description

Arashi Sangorō portrays a rōnin at a riverbank, inclining his upper body and extending an object across the sparse setting. The posture gives the figure a directed, purposeful presence while leaving the object’s exact identity open. Katsukawa Shunshō connects the named performer to a warrior character and a particular place, making the encounter engaging without reconstructing an unsupported dramatic action.

Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to around 1777. Ink and color on paper carry the theatrical subject into a format suited to repeated attention, where the setting and portrayed identity can be considered together. Its appeal comes from the balance between role and performer, giving a warrior subject the particular human presence of an actor rather than treating it as an impersonal type.
