Description
Katsukawa Shunshō’s scene from Chūshingura gathers three richly robed actors around a wooden stage setting and tree. Two figures stand while another occupies a lower seated position in front, giving the encounter a clear difference of height. The arrangement allows each performer’s presence to be understood through the group rather than as an isolated portrait.
The Edo-period work is a diptych of ink-and-color woodblock prints. Its paired format gives the scene an extended pictorial space, making the connection across the sheets part of the design. Shunshō preserves a moment from the dramatic world of Chūshingura without requiring the entire story to be retold. The print’s interest lies in how a stage subject becomes a lasting arrangement of figures and space, available for attention beyond the event of performance.
