Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V appears as a samurai wearing a purple haori, bringing a distinct garment into the actor’s warrior guise. The tall samurai stands beneath a geometric roof beam, wearing a pale, rose- and purple-gray outer robe with a hand and weapon near the waist. The architecture gives the upright figure a firm frame, allowing the role’s composed bearing to remain central.
Made around 1778, the nishiki-e woodblock print was produced with ink and color on paper. The haori adds a particular feature to the figure rather than leaving the samurai as a general emblem of rank. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves the actor’s transformation in a durable image, allowing recognition and costume to work together. Its interest lies in that conjunction, where the public identity of Danjūrō inhabits the distinctive bearing of a dramatic warrior.
