Description
Nakamura Rikō portrays an elaborately dressed courtesan in a dark robe, whose costume gives the figure a substantial, carefully presented presence. Dress becomes central to the role without erasing the identity of the named performer. Katsukawa Shunshō invites attention to the meeting of individual actor and theatrical character, where refinement is made visible through the portrayal itself.
Katsukawa Shunshō made this color woodblock print around 1778, during the Edo period. Ink and color on paper allow the role to be considered outside the flow of a stage performance. Its interest lies in the relationship between person and portrayal, where clothing and setting help establish a character without removing the actor whose performance brings that identity into view.
