Description
The Messenger in Black shows a smaller black-robed figure bending low before a larger figure in a green floral robe, with a diagonal tiled floor connecting the pair. Their unequal scale and contrasting clothing make the shared encounter distinct. Katsukawa Shunshō gives the messenger identified in the title a companion and a particular setting, allowing the scene to be appreciated without inventing the content of the message.
The color woodblock print belongs to Edo-period Japan and is made with ink and color on paper. A secure production date or further character identification is not supplied by the catalogue record. The work invites attention to the encounter itself, where a simple designation and a distinctive garment establish the subject while allowing the visible figure to remain the center of interest.
