Description
Four actors appear in roles that remain unidentified in this print by Katsukawa Shunshō. Four elaborately dressed actors form a broad stage group before railings, their separate costumes giving the ensemble variety. The arrangement connects the figures without dissolving their individual presence, allowing the scene to be encountered through a shared theatrical field.
The nishiki-e woodblock print uses ink and color on paper and belongs to Shunshō’s work in Edo-period Japan. Its interest lies in the way several stage presences occupy a single represented situation. The lack of named roles leaves the image’s human arrangement central: each figure contributes to an encounter larger than one actor alone. Shunshō gives that collective performance a durable form, retaining the suggestion of a drama whose specific narrative remains open.
