Description

Ōtani Hiroji III stands in a room as a samurai of high rank, joining an actor’s individual presence to the bearing of a privileged character. A long sword angles upward beside the leaning figure, giving the actor’s body a clear directional counterpart. Pale patterned garments add richness against the sparse architecture, allowing the role’s authority to emerge through both costume and a physically specific stance.

Made around 1774, the nishiki-e print was produced with ink and color on paper. The room provides a bounded place for the figure, allowing the assumed social position to be encountered at a more intimate scale. Katsukawa Shunshō’s subject remains the actor as samurai, not a claim about Hiroji’s everyday status. Its interest lies in that transformation, bringing the authority of a character into contact with the recognizable person who gives it visible form.
