Description

Katsukawa Shunshō’s portrait of Nakamura Nakazō I is dominated by an immense outer robe patterned in black, red and white geometric forms. Pale trousers lighten the figure below, while gathered hands provide a restrained gesture within the expansive costume. Partial decoration overhead gives a hint of stage setting, but the robe’s strong shapes carry most of the image’s dramatic presence.

Made around 1780, the work is an ink-and-color woodblock print. Shunshō preserves a public theatrical identity in a form that can be seen beyond the temporary appearance of performance. Nakazō’s name supplies the individual anchor, allowing the portrait’s interest to rest on a particular person rather than an anonymous type. The image invites attention to the performer’s presence while acknowledging that the role through which he appears remains incompletely recorded.
