Description
In Ichikawa Ebizō III’s Shibaraku role, Katsukawa Shunshō expands the warrior’s red costume with large white geometric patterns. A raised rectangular red item occupies the upper side of the figure, while a sword line crosses the body. The costume’s breadth and angular accents give this left triptych panel a commanding presence within the larger theatrical design.
Dated to the eleventh month of 1775, the work is the left sheet of a triptych printed in ink and color. This panel should therefore be understood as part of a larger design, with the surrounding dramatic arrangement extending beyond its boundaries. Shunshō concentrates one performer’s presence within that wider encounter. The print preserves the individual role while reminding us that a stage image can be both a portrait and a portion of a multi-part scene.
