Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V takes the role of Kisou Takiguchi in this print by Katsukawa Shunshō. A massive red costume carries large white geometric squares as the actor bends the upper body and raises an implement. The garment’s scale gives the motion unusual weight, making the role feel forceful through the meeting of graphic pattern and bodily action.
Dated to the twelfth month of 1770, the nishiki-e print was produced with ink and color on paper. It preserves a particular association within Danjūrō’s stage career, making the role available beyond the duration of a live appearance. Shunshō gives that performed identity a lasting form. The work’s appeal lies in the specificity of the encounter, where a dramatic figure becomes memorable through the individual who gives it visible presence.
