John Singleton Copley (1738–1815) was born in Boston and built his reputation as a portrait painter in Massachusetts before moving to England in 1774. His later career included large historical subjects as well as portraiture. This collection brings those interests together: closely observed faces and fabrics sit alongside drawings that explore gesture, balance and the arrangement of figures.
