Description
In Elopers in Musashino, Kitagawa Utamaro places a standing man and woman amid tall grasses and low red flowers. The man wears dark striped robes with red accents and carries a round white fan, while the woman’s pale yellow and pink clothing supplies a lighter counterpart. Growth surrounds the pair, making their shared presence part of a closely framed outdoor setting.
Dating to the early nineteenth century, the museum object is the right sheet of a triptych of ink-and-color woodblock prints. Its partial format preserves one portion of a larger design, concentrating this view on the two figures and surrounding grasses. Utamaro balances patterned clothing with the slender movement of the plants. The scene retains the title’s identity as an encounter between elopers, while its visual appeal rests in their companionship within a richly textured setting.
