Description
Kitagawa Utamaro pairs two itinerant women musicians in long robes and broad, shallow hats. Musical implements help identify their activity, while a framed inset with a red wall introduces another small pictorial space behind them. The figures share the composition without losing their separate positions, making dress and equipment central to their recognizable presence.
The work is an ink-and-color woodblock print. Its title identifies the women as tori-oi, allowing the image to be approached through a particular kind of traveling musical performance. Utamaro gives the pair a substantial visual identity, balancing the broad hats with the longer forms of their robes. The inset adds variety to the setting, while the principal figures keep attention on the people whose music belongs to the scene’s social world.
