Description
A praying mantis stands beside a slender grasshopper along a stalk in Kitagawa Utamaro’s spread from Picture Book of Crawling Creatures. Vine leaves and yellow gourds fill the right side, while a poem occupies the left. The contrasting bodies of the insects find their place among larger plant forms, making the garden’s small inhabitants easy to notice.
Published in 1788, Ehon Mushi Erami combines garden-creature images with kyōka poetry. Utamaro’s ink-and-color design gives the insects a pictorial role alongside the book’s literary life. The pairing invites comparison without needing to impose an invented story or fixed symbolism. Small creatures become worthy of sustained attention, offering a change of scale from the artist’s human portraits while retaining his concern for relationships within a carefully organized image.
