Description

Two women wear pale, loosely wrapped yukata after a bath, one standing and bending toward the other seated within a wooden interior. Their differing positions create a close relationship without requiring a dramatic event. Kitagawa Utamaro makes the interval after bathing a particular human encounter, allowing the relaxed garments and shared space to give everyday life a quietly engaging presence.

Dating to around 1796, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its Edo-period subject brings women’s everyday presence into a lasting visual form, where the paired figures can be considered together rather than as separate portraits. The work’s interest lies in that quiet specificity, making a small interval of daily life worthy of sustained looking without turning it into an elaborate narrative.
