Description
Kitagawa Utamaro brings a geisha and attendant close together beneath a yellow umbrella on a rainy night. Their dark garments contrast with the warmer canopy, while a box appears at the lower right. Diagonal marks animate the gray surrounding field, making the rain part of the design rather than merely an event named by the title.
Made around 1797, this ink-and-color woodblock print concentrates on the shelter shared by the two figures. The umbrella creates a small protected space within the moving weather, giving their proximity a practical as well as visual purpose. Utamaro balances the close faces with the broader canopy and slanting background marks. The image preserves a moment of passage through rain, where clothing, company and shelter form a compact scene of everyday resilience.
