Description

Paintings and calligraphy share this collaborative scroll, bringing several hands into one work rather than presenting a single artist’s composition. Kitagawa Utamaro II and Shokusanjin, also known as Ōta Nanpo, are among its contributors. The combination gives written and painted marks a common setting, allowing different forms of expression to be encountered together.

Dated around 1801–6, the hanging scroll uses ink and color on paper. The Met identifies it with sekiga, improvised poems and pictures commemorating gatherings of artists and poets. Utamaro II contributed maple leaves scattered over an icy pond at the lower right. The scroll’s interest lies in the relationship between that particular contribution and a larger collaborative surface, preserving an occasion of shared invention without making all of its voices interchangeable.
