Description
A young man turns slightly toward the right while looking outward in A Young Man with a Chain, a painting associated with Rembrandt and his studio. Curly reddish-brown hair, a wrapped collar and a jeweled chain give his appearance distinctive forms. Light from the left shapes the face, while the surrounding shadow allows its visible contours to remain especially prominent.
Painted around 1629 or 1632 in oil on wood, the work is a tronie: a study of appearance and expression rather than an identifiable sitter’s portrait. Its authorship remains uncertain despite Rembrandt’s monogram, and some scholars have proposed his associate Isaac de Joudreville. The painting’s interest lies in the encounter between light, facial character and imaginative clothing, allowing a particular human presence to remain engaging without a secure name or a fully resolved attribution.
