Description
Abduction of Proserpine shows a dramatic struggle against a turbulent sky. A woman stretches her arm upward as a powerful creature carries her away, its twisting body and the surrounding landscape joining the same rush of movement. Clouds roll above the figures, giving the mythological encounter an atmosphere of danger and unsettled force.
In this etching, Albrecht Dürer turns the story of Proserpine’s capture into an image of physical tension. Flowing hair, straining limbs and the creature’s coarse textures create a vivid contrast with the distant landscape. Rather than arranging the subject as a calm classical scene, he makes the viewer feel the pull of the action and the urgency of the woman’s resistance.
