Description
A dark-haired woman inclines her head toward the left in Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu assis au collier. One hand rests near the necklace at her chest, while the other settles lower across her lap. Golden flesh tones stand against a dark brown-black ground, making the figure closely present while the small necklace gives the broad bodily forms a more particular point of attention.
Executed in 1917–18 in oil on canvas, the painting brings the traditional nude into Modigliani’s distinctive treatment of contour and proportion. A recognizable person is given a pictorial character shaped by the artist’s choices rather than described through an inventory of features. The necklace contributes to that arrangement without becoming a separate story. The work invites a slower look at how a modest detail and the broader figure can reinforce one another within a carefully held composition.
