Description
Nu Couché Au Coussin Bleu stretches a pale figure diagonally across a dark, reddish setting. The smiling head lies at the far left, with an arm raised above it and a long blue cushion beneath the upper body. Amedeo Modigliani gives the body a continuous sweep toward the right, using the contrast between warm skin, cool fabric and darker surrounding space to hold the reclining pose together.
Documented as a 1916 oil painting, the work gives its reclining pose a broad, continuous rhythm. The lifted arm extends the figure’s contour and the long cushion reinforces its diagonal, allowing a few large shapes to define the scene. Cool blue fabric separates the body from the darker setting, while the smile gives the face a more immediate, individual presence within the elongated arrangement.
