Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s American Singer faces left with a broad raised-arm gesture, wearing a checked jacket that gives the upper body a lively surface. The profile and extended arm connect the figure with the act of performing, making bodily direction as important as facial detail. The surrounding openness concentrates attention on a single animated presence.
Dated 1893, this brush and spatter lithograph was printed in black on laid Japan paper for the deluxe edition of Le Café Concert. Edward Ancourt printed the image for L’Estampe Originale, distinct from Toulouse-Lautrec’s role as artist. The design gives an unnamed singer a lasting place within the album’s entertainment subjects. Its changing marks and patterned clothing preserve a graphic encounter that remains individual even without a personal name supplied by the title.
