Description
Jeanne appears in left-facing profile beneath a flowered hat in Édouard Manet’s etching and aquatint. Dense foliage and decorative hatching gather around her figure. The close arrangement connects the sitter to the springlike setting, allowing portraiture and surrounding patterns to share the image’s interest without losing the immediacy of a particular person.
The design dates from 1882, while this impression was printed in 1902 for the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in an issue also associated with Alfred Louis Porcabeuf. Those dates distinguish Manet’s image from its later publication. Line and tone give the subject a material character of its own, making the portrait engaging in a printed medium rather than simply reproducing painted color. The work preserves a human presence through an image whose visual appeal outlasted its original occasion.
