Description
By the Seashore is an 1883 painting by Auguste Renoir, depicting a woman seated in a wicker chair against an airy coastal view. Her carefully drawn face and smoothly handled figure contrast with the lighter, quicker strokes of the beach, sea and sky. The relationship between sitter and landscape gives the composition its distinctive balance.
Renoir likely posed his model in the studio, drawing on studies made along the Normandy coast for the setting behind her. The work reflects his changing approach after traveling in Italy: he sought the clarity of Renaissance figure painting while retaining Impressionism’s luminosity. In By the Seashore, those interests meet in the contrast between the stable presence of the woman and the freely painted surroundings. The result is both a composed portrait and an evocation of coastal light.
