Small passages of red, yellow, blue and green are scattered across Auguste Renoir’s sheet of studies. Trees and leafy fruit appear as separate observations rather than parts of a single finished landscape. The open paper gives each experiment room to breathe, making the changes of subject and scale easy to follow. Color sometimes becomes the main event, while elsewhere a few drawn marks establish the structure of a natural form.

Created around 1885 with watercolor and ink over graphite, the sheet combines color with drawn structure. The different materials allow Renoir to shift emphasis rather than give every subject the same treatment. The work can be approached as a collection of visual inquiries, where the page remains open to more than one direction of attention. Its appeal comes from the visible process of looking, bringing varied natural forms together without turning them into a single finished landscape.
