Description
Christ before Pilate by Albrecht Dürer draws the viewer into a public judgment framed by architecture. Christ stands with attendants before Pilate, who occupies a raised position beneath an arch. Figures gather across the foreground, while steps and columns guide the eye into the scene and mark the difference between the accused and the governor.
Made around 1508 for The Small Passion, this woodcut uses the setting to clarify relationships of power. The upright lines of the building contrast with the changing directions of the people’s gestures, creating a firm stage for a tense exchange. Dürer gives the biblical episode a vivid human scale, allowing the crowded space and opposing poses to carry its emotional weight.
