Description
Christ Crowned with Thorns sets a figure of quiet endurance at the center of a crowded, forceful scene. Seated beneath a vaulted arch, Christ is surrounded by tormentors whose raised arms and long rods create a web of sharp diagonals. His still posture contrasts with their exaggerated movements and expressions.
Dated to about 1500 and possibly by Albrecht Dürer, this woodcut uses bold contours and energetic lines to give the episode a vivid theatrical presence. The arched ceiling encloses the action, while a glimpse of buildings beyond opens the setting outward. Details such as the scattered thorns and patterned clothing draw the eye through the image without diminishing its central emotional contrast.
