Description
Christ Crowned with Thorns shows Christ beneath a vaulted interior as three tormentors use long rods to press the crown onto his head. A fourth figure kneels in the foreground, bringing the mock ceremony close to the seated body. Beyond the arch, a small view of buildings opens from the crowded room into the outside world.
This woodcut, possibly by Albrecht Dürer, describes the episode through a forceful contrast between movement and endurance. Raised arms and slanting rods converge above Christ, while his hands and posture remain comparatively still. The kneeling figure intensifies the humiliation by imitating homage. Clearly outlined architecture contains the action, giving the small image a direct emotional structure in which gesture and the pressure of surrounding bodies carry the story.
