Description
Christ Taking Leave from His Mother by Albrecht Dürer focuses on a farewell at the edge of a modest building. Mary kneels before Christ, her companions gathered close behind, while he raises a hand toward her. Their contrasting upright and lowered postures make the encounter immediately legible, even within the small and closely arranged scene.
Created around 1508 for The Small Passion, the woodcut turns a moment before departure into an image of tenderness and resolve. Broad robes and clear outlines give the principal figures weight, while a glimpse of landscape opens the world beyond them. Dürer finds the emotional center in the space between blessing and grief, allowing a restrained gesture to carry the significance of the farewell.
