Description
Max Beckmann’s Columbine portrays a seated woman in a dark, vividly colored interior. She holds a pink mask near her lap while one hand rises toward her face. Strong outlines divide her bare shoulders, dark clothing, and the green curtain behind.
The mask introduces a second face within the close portrait. Beckmann gives ordinary surfaces a tense, angular character, using bright accents to interrupt the darker setting. The woman’s contained pose makes the theatrical object feel both playful and strangely personal.
