Description
Max Beckmann’s The Night compresses several figures into a cramped interior filled with angular limbs, furniture, and violent gestures. Faces and hands emerge from warm browns and pale tones, while dark outlines force the forms into sharp relief. The room offers little open space.
The scene’s disturbing force comes from its crowded structure. Each body seems caught against another object or figure, making the interior feel unstable and oppressive. Beckmann uses distorted proportion and abrupt lines to give the human encounter a tense, fractured presence.
