Description
A man walks a dog in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s cover design for Les Vieilles Histoires, giving a collection of stories a familiar human and animal encounter. The lightly printed forms leave the design an open character rather than a dense narrative scene. An ordinary outing becomes the volume’s outward visual presence, suggesting a world of events without recounting them all.
Made in 1893, this lithograph was printed in olive green on wove paper. Its association with Jean Goudezki’s writing connects the design to another creative voice, while Toulouse-Lautrec remains responsible for the visual invention. The printed work retains its own presence even apart from the volume it introduces. Its interest lies in that double role, where an image can stand independently and still suggest a world of words and stories extending beyond its immediate boundaries.
