Description
Edgar Degas’s Dancer finds grace in a moment of preparation. A standing ballet dancer adjusts her costume, her pale dress set off by a vivid blue sash. The angled arms and gentle turn of her body give the figure a natural rhythm, while softly worked surroundings keep attention on the gesture.
Made about 1880, the original drawing uses pastel and charcoal on blue-gray paper. Light strokes and stronger outlines work together to suggest the texture of the costume and the movement of the figure. The work belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
