Description
In The Sea of Ice, Caspar David Friedrich builds a formidable landscape from broken slabs of ice. Sharp planes rise and lean against one another, their pale surfaces edged with earthy browns and cold blue shadows. Almost lost among them, the remains of a ship reveal the scale and force of the frozen sea. The clear, distant sky offers little relief from the immense stillness below.
Painted in 1823–24, the work brings the power of nature to the center of Friedrich’s Romantic vision. Its striking geometry draws the eye before the wreck emerges, turning an apparently silent scene into an image of overwhelming force. The original belongs to the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
