Description
Polidoro da Caravaggio’s Design for a Crucifix with the Virgin Mary, Saint Mary Magdalen, and Saint John places a delicate sacred arrangement on a narrow, pale sheet. The ornate cross rises high above the robed figures gathered at its base, with Christ’s small body concentrated near the upper center. Fine pen lines and brown washes establish the design without closing every part into a uniformly finished surface.
The sheet preserves a stage of invention in which gesture, spacing and the distribution of forms can still be examined together. The crucifix provides a structural and spiritual center, while the surrounding figures introduce different human responses to the subject. Its date is not established in the museum record, so the drawing is best approached through its documented attribution and medium. It offers a close view of how a sacred composition can be shaped through decisions made on paper.
