Description

Édouard Manet’s design for the poster and cover of The Raven reduces the poem’s central presence to an isolated black bird’s head. The beak points to the right, and the stark profile stands against the pale sheet without a surrounding room or human figure. A few decisive shapes give the raven an unmistakable, watchful character.

Created in 1875 as a transfer lithograph, the design accompanied Edgar Allan Poe’s poem in Stéphane Mallarmé’s French translation. Its economy suits the immediate impact of a cover image: the bird becomes a compact visual emblem of the text. Manet avoids an elaborate narrative scene here, letting the contrast between dark head and open ground suggest the concentrated intensity of the creature that gives the poem its name.
