Description
Divers Trophées gathers fantastical armor around an elaborate helmet topped by a lion and curling plumes. A crescent-shaped shield opens to the left, while a richly decorated vessel with a fierce birdlike head tilts across the right. Light and shadow distinguish the engraved surfaces within this crowded yet carefully balanced arrangement.
René Lochon’s 1651 engraving follows Charles Errard’s drawings of Polidoro da Caravaggio’s decorations for Palazzo Milesi in Rome. Human figures, foliage, animal heads, and military equipment merge into a display of ornamental invention, with the curved lettering below giving the composition a firm visual base.
