Description
Mother and child sit near the center of Polidoro da Caravaggio’s Holy Family drawing, with kneeling figures at the left and an older woman at the right. Infants occupy the nearer part of the grouping, while a tree gives the space behind them a simple natural boundary. Brown wash draws the figures together, allowing different generations to share a closely held devotional scene.
Made in 1520–25, the sheet combines brown ink with brown and gray-brown washes over chalk, adding white accents to the forms. Traces of a grid connect the drawing to the practical construction of a composition, while the changing marks keep the maker’s decisions visible. Polidoro gives the figures substance without needing the surface of a finished oil painting. The work rewards attention to that balance, where a devotional arrangement remains closely connected to the physical act of drawing.
