Description
Caspar David Friedrich’s Dolmen in the Snow places an ancient stone tomb among bare winter trees. Three dark trunks rise above the snow, their broken tops and intricate branches standing against a muted sky. The low stones form a heavy center, partly concealed beneath the cold, pale ground.
The painting brings traces of an earlier human world into a landscape marked by age and stillness. Friedrich uses restrained color and stark silhouettes to give both trees and monument a solemn presence. Beyond the immediate forms, the distance fades into haze, extending the scene’s quiet sense of time and endurance.
