Description
Delacroix’s Three Studies of a Male Cadaver sets a vertical anatomical study at the left beside two more horizontal views of the torso and rib cage. The different orientations make the page a comparison of bodily structure rather than a single posed figure. Fine marks separate parts and surfaces, giving the exposed forms a searching, closely observed presence on the paper.
The undated drawing uses pen and brown ink with graphite. Its écorché subject directs attention beneath outward appearance, making anatomy central to the artist’s investigation of the body. Delacroix allows several views to share the surface, so each contributes a different aspect of the same physical study. The sheet can be approached as a record of concentrated looking, where orientation, contour and internal structure matter more than a finished setting or an individual portrait.
