Description
In Édouard Manet, Bust-Length Portrait, Edgar Degas captures his fellow artist with an alert gaze and a strong, direct presence. Fine lines describe the face and beard, while densely worked shadows give weight to the coat and background. The contrast between pale skin and dark clothing concentrates attention on Manet’s expression.
Created about 1868, the original print combines etching, drypoint, and aquatint. These techniques bring together crisp detail and rich tonal passages, turning a small portrait into a compelling study of character. This impression is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
