Description
The Elles exhibition poster places a woman in a teal skirt at the right, her back turned and arms raised toward her head. Pale bedding fills the lower area, while red and gray lettering introduces the announcement beneath the image. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec connects an intimate interior subject with a public printed surface, making picture and title share the design.
Dated 1896, this edition is a crayon, brush and spatter lithograph printed in four colors on beige wove paper. Gustave Pellet published the design, which differs in function from the portfolio-cover and frontispiece versions. Toulouse-Lautrec joins image and announcement within one printed surface, giving an introductory design a second public life. The work offers an encounter with the series’ identity through its exhibition form, without claiming to represent every image in the portfolio.
