Description

In Saluant le Public, a small full-length performer bows toward the public, with a stage box and diagonal steps giving the gesture a tangible setting. Crisp, faint marks leave the body room to remain the principal presence. The act of acknowledgement makes performance a relationship with an audience, giving a brief outward movement a human significance beyond the figure alone.

Made in 1898, the lithograph is printed with a beige tint stone on laid paper. Toulouse-Lautrec gives the passing exchange a lasting material presence, allowing a brief public gesture to become a subject for sustained looking. The work’s interest lies in the relationship between someone presenting a performance and those receiving that appearance. Even without a full account of the occasion, the image can preserve the human connection through which performance becomes a shared event.
