Description
Dark smokestacks and spreading plumes fill Edgar Degas’s Factory Smoke, their forms sweeping toward the right across a pale field. The image dispenses with a clearly described horizon, giving the industrial subject an unusually concentrated presence. Smoke appears as something changing beside the solid chimneys, making the meeting of structure and atmosphere the scene’s main visual event.
Made between 1877 and 1879, the work is a monotype printed in black ink. This method transfers an inked design from a plate, allowing broad tonal effects to become part of the image’s character. Degas uses a subject of everyday modern activity as an opportunity to explore atmosphere through a restricted palette. The scene’s appeal lies in that balance, where a recognizable industrial setting can also become an arrangement of darkness, light and shifting visibility.
