Description
A giant winged creature carries human figures in Flying Folly, giving flight an uncanny rather than liberating character. The passengers and their extraordinary bearer form a strange airborne gathering whose scale unsettles ordinary expectations. The image asks the viewer to consider movement through the sky as an experience of dependence and uncertainty rather than simple freedom.
Goya’s etching and aquatint belong to the Disparates, a group of designs in which fantasy and recognizable human behavior continually meet. The broad tones of the print give the impossible subject a tangible presence, allowing it to feel immediate without making its meaning straightforward. The work remains compelling through that tension, where an invented creature becomes the means of carrying familiar bodies into an unfamiliar world.
