Description
Two women stand among trees in Paul Gauguin’s small woodcut Fragrance, their pale long skirts contrasting with darker upper bodies. Branches form a canopy around the figures, giving the vertical scene a closely enclosed character. The title Noa Noa adds a sensory association to the visual encounter, inviting attention to an atmosphere suggested through the grouping and its surrounding forms.
Made in 1894–95, the image was printed in color on Japanese paper. The woodcut’s carved character and the presence of color give the scene a different rhythm from a smoothly modeled painting. Gauguin uses the medium to make visual contrasts part of the subject’s appeal, allowing the viewer to move between the image and the marks that establish it. The print offers a compact encounter in which suggestion and material handling remain closely joined.
