Description
Three travelers walk along a path at the center-right of Robert Zünd’s Gang nach Emmaus, or The Walk to Emmaus. Tall trees rise at the left, with a fallen branch close to the foreground and a luminous opening toward blue sky beyond. Warm and darker robes distinguish the figures, allowing their small gathering to remain visible within the forest’s much wider presence.
Painted in 1877 in oil on canvas, the work connects a religious subject with sustained attention to landscape. The familiar story of the journey to Emmaus is approached through travelers within a natural setting rather than an isolated symbolic group. Its appeal lies in that meeting of ordinary movement and spiritual association. A walk through the countryside becomes a scene that can be experienced as a place while also carrying another meaning through the identity and relationship of its figures.
