Description
In Garden Scene, Jean-François Millet brings the eye close to workers tending the planted ground. A woman in blue kneels at the right, while another figure in a white bonnet works farther left among the vegetable rows. The garden’s enclosure and nearby buildings give their activity a familiar domestic setting, connecting cultivation to the space of daily life.
Painted in oil on canvas in 1854, the scene belongs to the summer Millet spent with his family in Gruchy, the Normandy village where he was born. The English Channel appears beyond the garden, extending this intimate working space toward the wider coastal landscape. The painting holds those scales together: small, attentive gestures among the plants unfold within a place shaped by home, land, and sea.
