Description

Goetz and Friar Martin stand together in an interior in this printed image after Eugène Delacroix. The friar at the left bows toward his companion, making the meeting tangible through the relationship between two bodies. Their named literary identities provide a wider frame while the immediate gesture gives the encounter its own close human presence on paper.

Made after 1845, the source is identified as a wood engraving, or possibly a stereotype, by the engraving firm Andrew, Best, Leloir, Hotelin and Régnier after Delacroix. The uncertainty concerns the print’s material production and should remain qualified. Its interest lies in the circulation of a design through another printed form. The work joins Delacroix’s visual invention to the makers responsible for its reproduction, preserving a clear distinction between artistic source and executed impression.
