Description

Goetz and Friar Martin stand together in an interior in this wood engraving designed by Eugène Delacroix. The friar at the left inclines toward the other man’s hand, giving the meeting a particular gesture of connection. Their contrasting identities become an intimate encounter between neighboring bodies, allowing a literary scene to gain human meaning through a modest action.

Made in 1845, the print was engraved by Andrew, Best, Leloir, Hotelin and Régnier after Delacroix’s design. The source records a proof before lettering, a distinction belonging to this particular printed state. Delacroix’s invention and the engravers’ execution remain separate contributions. The work’s appeal lies in that translation from design to printed image, where a dramatic meeting receives a concise material presence through several hands involved in its production.
